GLP what?

Are you tired of trying every diet under the sun and still not seeing the results you want? Do you feel like you're constantly battling cravings and hunger pangs? Boy, do I know that feeling! As a nutritionist, I obviously know what to eat, but I have struggled for YEARS, regardless. Always starting a diet on Monday. And always elbow deep in Taco Bell by Tuesday. Sigh.

I just want you to know….it is NOT your fault. Sometimes we need a little assistance from the mediation world. Enter: GLP-1 medications.

Now, I know what you're thinking. "GLP-what? Is that some kind of weird science experiment?" Nope, it's actually a type of medication that can help you lose weight and keep it off. Let me break it down for you.

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, which is a hormone that your body produces naturally. This hormone helps regulate your appetite and metabolism, among other things. But here's the kicker: GLP-1 medications mimic the effects of this hormone, making you feel fuller and more satisfied after meals. This can lead to a decrease in appetite, which can in turn lead to weight loss.

But that's not all. GLP-1 medications have also been shown to improve blood sugar control, reduce insulin resistance, and lower the risk of heart disease. So not only can they help you lose weight, but they can also improve your overall health.

Now, I know some of you might be skeptical about taking medication for weight loss. And I get it. But here's the thing: GLP-1 medications are not a magic pill. They still require you to make healthy lifestyle changes, such as eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly (which is where I come in!). But the medication can give you an extra boost and help you stick to your goals. And we all deserve a bit of a boost these days.

So, who can benefit from GLP-1 medications? Well, they're typically prescribed to people with type 2 diabetes, as they can help lower blood sugar levels. But they can also be used for weight loss in people without diabetes who have a BMI of 30 or higher (or 27 or higher if they have other health conditions such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol).

Of course, like any medication, GLP-1 medications do come with potential side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. But these side effects are usually mild and go away after a few weeks. And, I can assist you on reducing (or preventing) these altogether.

So, if you're struggling to lose weight, have tried everything under the sun and want to explore your options, talk to your doctor about GLP-1 medications. And if you need some extra support and guidance along the way, don't hesitate to reach out to me. Together, we can help you achieve your weight loss goals and improve your overall health and wellness.
